Vermont All-Star coaches come to Brattleboro to offer off-season training to local gridders

There was a time when the Southern Vermont All-Star Football Camp was the event of the summer in Rutland. The number of aspiring football players from middle school and high school grew until well over 200 participants crowded Flaitz Field.

A former local football standout is giving back to the sport that he loves. Chris Redding played for Mount Anthony and Burr and Burton football before continuing his career at the University of New Hampshire. Redding currently serves as a coach for Ardrey Kell High School in Charlotte, N.C.

The biggest story at the Vermont All-Star Football Camp on Monday at Rutland’s Alumni Field was the robust numbers. Whereas last year there were about 50 players at the camp, the 2022 edition of the camp boasted about 130 players. Executive Director Chris Redding said it might reach 150 before the week is over.

It is a summer jammed full with football for Mount Anthony Union High School graduate Gavin Johnson.
The Assumption College sophomore is at Rutland High School’s Alumni Field this week on the staff of the Vermont All-Star Football Camp. Next week, he will be at South Burlington when the camp shifts to that location.

Jim Sweeney was once a fixture on the New York Jets offensive line starting in 158 consecutive games at one point of his 16-year NFL career.
Maybe someday, he will be a fixture at the Vermont All-Star Football Camp in Rutland.
